Sadly eating disorders remain very very poorly understood by our Muslim community, families and health services. Bulimia and Binge Eating Disorder (BED) are quite possibly the most misunderstood disorders in our Muslim community today. People with Bulimia and BED are just not seen as ill enough or in need of medical help. This could be due to the reason, a patient with anorexia nervosa is typically thin to the point of looking starved and people with Bulimia and BED can often appear very normal. Bulimia Nervosa is the most  sinister of the three major eating disorders, because it’s  a secret disease. People with bulimia feel shame about their disorder, so they will try to do anything and everything to hide their disorder. I sometimes feel very sad, when people disclose they’ve lived with this illness for over a decade now and they don’t see any hope for recovery. Their families have no idea and they simply continue to suffer in isolation.

The thing is, you don’t need to have any special attributes to overcome bulimia. You don’t need amazing willpower, fantastic resolve, super confidence or anything like that. In fact, I truly believe that with the right guidance and support anyone can overcome bulimia.
